We are looking to get a 30×36″ steel roof hatch. Bilco was recommended to me by roofer but I can get Acudor at Home Depot cheaper. By spec they seem the same. Has anyone got an opinion about relative quality of the 2 brands/hatches? Anyone used Acudor and have a good/bad opinion? Any other brands that are better?

I realise this detail is a bit archane but the price diff is about 25-30% and I don’t want to get something I will regret later.

Thanks

  1. A have purchased directly from Acudor 24×24 aluminum roof hatch and intended to install it on my house, but roofer said the hatch doesn’t have adequate lip to prevent water to get under it (on sloped roof – on the bottom side, where the shingles would be under the lip), it is not usable for residentioal house. Acudor refused to accept return, claiming it was “special order”, now I am stuck with the hatch, for which I’ve paid over 900 dolars, sitting in my basement. There is nothing on their web site to determine which hatch models would be considered “special order”. The site seem very friendly, but after you get into a problem, their attitude changes!

  2. I’ve owned a brownstone for 30 years and learned the hard way not to go for price before dependability in anything structural. The hatch will also have to be installed and flashed properly. Home Depot contractors are not always the best. Home Depot buys bulk not quality – it’s like the Wal-Mart philosophy. Get references from people who’ve owned for awhile.
My roofer sold his business so I’m shopping for a new one. Premier is around here for a long time and knows brownstones. They’ll (Anthony) give you a real estimate.
Sometimes you think you’re paying too much, but I have a deck 6 yrs old. Thought I had a great roof and just found out it has to come off (iron work and all) to fix a leak which requires a new roof. Now that’s when you’re paying too much!

  4. We used NY Iron Works to replace our front and back hatches. Not sure if they do roof hatches but we were pleased with the work and price. We dealt with Elvin. 917-681-4608
