Just started a reno in a coop. Everything was approved by board. We install a new front door, nicer and taller and suddenly my neighbour complains that it makes her apt look bad. She would like us to pay for same door to be instaleed on her apt to keep the common area uniform. She is a board mbm so we are cautious. opinion plse?
Thanks

  1. Send her a estimate for the work (with your markup and profit) and see if she approves it. (Get a signed copy and deposit (say 50% with the rest due upon completion). You just now made some $$.

  2. Well if the BoM reviewed and approved the work, she is crazy as stated by others. You may want to write a letter to the BoM telling them what transpired. At least it will go on record and any further issues with her could be considered harassment. Man theree is a lot of harassment going on arond town these days 🙂 (see my post to another similar thread)

  3. OP: “She is a board mbm so we are cautious. ”

So what? You already own your place, what’s the crazy bat going to do? Have you evicted? If she brings it up again, do what Archie suggests. His was sound, reasonable advice and in the future, just ask: What Would Archie Do?

PS: Archie, I’m not being sarcastic. That was really good advice.

  4. Under no circumstances do you have a responsibility to pay for another coop owner’s door. And coming from a board member the remarks have an edge of intimidation and border on harassment. On the other hand, she is your neighbor, and you have to live there. Point out politely to her, in writing, the responsibility of each owner to provide their own door; attach the permission granted you by the board to replace yours (yes I know she’s seen it – that’s the point); thank her for the compliment on your choice, and leave it at that. Stay polite, be responsive, leave a paper trail and be prepared to discuss your sense of intimidation with the full board. Good luck!
