replacing chimney lining in brownstone
I have to replace the lining in the chiminey from the boiler in the basement, all the way up to the roof of a 4 storey brownstone. I’ve had two estimates, one at $6000 and one at $2000. This includes replacing the clay flue and using old bricks to finish the wall (as some floors…

Would anyone have any recommendations or prices for similar work they may have done as I have two hugely different estimates.
And also my plumber had mentioned it could be replaced using a metal liner as it’s only for the boiler and that this would not be as expensive?
Ant thoughts or recommendations would be much appreciated.
we got estimates from a company called “above the rest” in Long Island and their quotes were closer to the post above and that was from the roof to the basement, really 5 stories since the house is 4 stories plus basement. I have no idea if they are good since we can’t afford to do it yet. that was for the metal sleeve. The cost is less as you move upward since less material is needed.

Using a metal flue is fine. The price should about 1500. Get estimates. Before you do the work make sure any bricks within the flue are not loose and point where needed. Most chimney cleaning companies will do this kind of work. Try companies that are located in queens/long island they do this work all the time. Good luck
Hey, Diana, what is a draft inducer? And would you mind sharing the cost? I have a 4-story brownstone, and would like to convert one or two of the parlor-level gas/coal fireplaces to wood. I have several available flues on each, and the fireboxes are already nice and deep, so I think it should be pretty do-able. Thanks!
I don’t know if they work in Brooklyn, or whether they’re too expensive, but Halstead Welles, on east Houston St. in Manhattan near Clinton, does a great job of all things relating to fireplaces. They rebuilt my fireplace into a modern, usable fireplace with a draft inducer and I’ve been using it all winter ever since.
Any recommendation on who to do the lining?
i had the same thing. metal liner. about $2500.
The same thing just happened with my 8:39 post (except that I knew not to re-post it. I got:
“An error occurred
Rebuild failed: Writing to ‘/home/sites/bstoner.wpengine.com/web/forum/archives/chimney/index.php.new’ failed: Opening local file ‘/home/sites/bstoner.wpengine.com/web/forum/archives/chimney/index.php.new’ failed: Permission denied “
Sorry for the double posting, but I got an error message saying the posting had failed. I think the recent “improvements” might need some tweaking.
