plaster vs. sheetrock
Do we go with sheetrock or does it have to be plaster? Is there getting the same look without plastering?
I’m sorry if this has been posted before, but I can really use help on this one. After putting in new plumbing and rewiring our brownstone and being relocated while the work is being done, I am so ready to be done with the whole renovation process. Now where up to the walls and ceilings and the question is plaster or sheetrock? We’ve found great foam/cement moldings to replicate the original, but we’re confused if this is the way to go, or plaster all the way. My husband says plaster ( an opinion I once shared) now longing for my home, I’m wondering if we can get away with sheetrock. We’ve asked experts who say for the walls it doesn’t matter because it’s just a flat surface either way and the ceiling only matters if your going for the more ornate look. We’re not, just crown molding and center medallion (again, I’ve found wonderful sites that recreate the look out of foam and cement, not the home depot kind). Dear Husband, doesn’t agree, he feels there’s no substitute for plaster. I need to know from other homeowners their experiences, suggestions and opinions. We’re down to the wire now and I just want to go home! Please advise.
11:23, it’s usually called ‘mass loaded vinyl’ or MLV, some brand names are AudioSeal, or Extreme Sound Barrier. but check out this site, it has some interesting info about how mlv compares to other methods:

i haven’t used quietrock myself, as i determined it was too expensive compared to using double-sheetrock with ‘quietglue’ in between. this does a very good job of muffling sound and creates a heavy (‘thud’) wall.
Two layers of gysum with sound attenuation blanket (it’s a different kind of fiberglass insulation) is fairly standard practice here in the city. The make several different grades of sound attentuation/insulation, you want something with a very high STC rating.

Do you have any experince with Quiet Rock. I’m having problems with a noisy neighboor and I thought that sounds like a good solution….
Thank you to all who have responded. We have been
discussing these options.
Another suggestion was to to use two layers of sheetrock in lieu of the soundproofing with the plaster skimcoat and yet another was to use the soundproofing between two layers of sheetrock and the skimcoating What if anything is the thought on these suggestions?
There is a company that makes a product called restoration plaster, you trowell 2 coats of the basecoat on your existing plaster wall followed by the finish coat.I have seen it done and the walls were as smooth as glass without any sanding. The name of the manufacter is master of plaster and they are upstate NY but have a distributer in Queens. The product is specfied by quite a few architects to restore existing plaster finishes and to cut down landfill over use.The manufacter is a 5th generation plaster contractor and his website shows some major projects in restoration.I wouldnt hesitate to use this product for your project.
JL I am looking for a product to spec for my project. Do you have a spec or product name for the rubber sheet material? I have seen a few listed, but they seem to be produced for use in the UK.
Thanks
there’s lots of products, the simplest thing is stuffing the cavity with fiberglass insulation. it won’t kill sound transmission but it will muffle things and make the wall feel more solid. beyond that there’s more involved methods invovling mass-loaded vinyl (heavy rubber sheet under sheetrock, soundproofed sheetrock (quietrock, see quietsolutions.com), ‘green glue,’ or combinations of all the above.
Does anyone have a specific name for the soundproofing material? And what size does it come in? (I am assuming these are sheets of something)
Chopper and 6:52 are dead on! Don’t do sheetrock without sound insulation. You’ll hate how every little noise can be heard throughout the house.
