I need to build a new set of wooden stairs that run from the garden level of my brownstone to the top level – i.e. 4 levels. This replaces the original stairs – I am saving and reusing the original banisters and spindles – about 25 of which are missing and being made to order. Everything else is going to be new, treads, risers, back, everything. I’ve been quoted $19,000. And I am trying to find out – in addition to getting other quotes – whether this is reasonable.

This quote also includes a standard straight set of metal stairs from the garden level to the cellar.

  1. I second William Barnett. He replaced my staircase, and for an internal staircase he made a bannister system. He did a lot of other custom millwork. His prices are excellent and his work excellent. He is also a very fast worker.

  2. I recently had new stairs installed 1st flr. thru 3rd. I kept the original banister and rods. The cost $12,500. I have to tell you that Heights Woodworking did an excellent job. They were very perfectinist and ver perfessional, arrived M-F at 7:30 and left at 4:45. They secured the home from dust and vacumned after each visit. I highly recommend them.

  3. I had all you are having done (excluding metal stairs) plus all spindles were laquer spray painted offsite for 10K, Call William Barnett at NY Fine Circular Stairs (718) 218-9051. He did a terrific job.
