I just purchased a co-op in a Limestone building and need to upgrade the electrical system in the apartment – apparently this involves bringing more electricity into the third floor apartment from the basement as well as rewiring the entire apartment. Can anyone recommend a quality electrician who is familiar with old buildings? Also, does this involve ripping down ceilings and walls?

  1. Call Gary at MAM electric in Bay Ridge (718) 492-6800. Truth be told, he is a friend of mine. He did a great job when I renovated my kitchen. In terms of other references, they also handled alot of the electrical work on the new Fairway in redhook.

  2. I used Laredo electric. 718-227-6607. Old brownstone. Upping the electric involved improvements by coned and a city inspection. Pretty much assume that your walls will have holes all over the place, so budget for wall repair and repainting.

  3. WCK electric in brooklyn is doing a job for me right now, i think they are quite good for a non union shop. Bringing new electric in is a pretty invasive project and may involve new service from Con edison from the street. It also absolutely requires an accessible chase running vertically from the basement. One strategy is to remove all the baseboard and hide the wiring there, otherwise it will be a lot of holes in the walls and ceilings.
