Along the lines of the recent “oil vs latex” post I am wondering what to paint the heating pipe running up through my kitchen. My painter told me to get oil paint but if the EPA is banning it I do not really want to use it. I am not interested in the look of oil paint anyway but I am wondering how best to finish the pipe (isn’t it weird that we paint these pipes in the first place??). The pipe is covered in a couple coats of flat paint now. Is there a school of thought on paint and heating pipes? Thanks!
I have a heat pipe in my newly renovated kitchen and when I asked about painting it I was also told that the only choices for heat-resistant paint were white, black or silver. It had been painted dozens of times and the paint was flaking and peeling pretty badly.
You don’t need “high heat paint” though it would work great. It’s a lot more expensive.
Just go to a paint store and read the back of the can. Lots of enamel paints meant for metal and wood specifically say that they’re meant for uses such as heat pipes and radiators.
i bought some kind of high-heat paint (white) at Pearl a couple years ago. worked really well. never chipped or flaked.
the radiator paint comes in white too. i have used it.
it seems the radiator paint only comes in black and silver. at some point i’m gonna get some BBQ grill paint and paint mine fire-engine red!
you can use regular paint on the pipes, but the paint may crack and peel over time. but ain’t it rustic?
I used that silver spray paint that is meant for radiators or hot pipes. Regular paint will chip like crazy if you use it on a heating pipe. I don’t know how you feel about the silver look but in our living room it fits in b/c we also did the silver tin ceiling without any paint.
Ours have rope wrapped around them, which looks attractive and keeps one from being burned by touching the pipes. It’s better than the paint because the paint gets chipped and nasty.
