I’m redoing the electric in my house and was wondering if anybody has a source for a more sophisticated outlet. It seems in todays day and age, the outlet with two plugs is not ideal for many needs (like a home office). does anybody know a source for something more like a cross between an outlet, a power strip, and a cable storage box — all in a nice built in unit? thanks for any help!!

  1. IIts called plugmold. It has outlets every 3 or 6 inches depending on the model and can come with a pplug already attached or you can hardwire it. Home DDepot has the with a plug or go to the electrical ssupply. it comes in 3 or6 ft lengths. I have a piece screwed to the underside of my desk

  2. you shouldn’t run data lines alongside electric- its bad for the data signal and just makes sense to keep the systems separate ( like you don’t run electric on top of your plumbing). 6-12″ should be OK separation, cross at perpendiculars, the wire brand should spec out the requirements.

aside from that there are plenty of conduit systems on the market from Hubble Premise Wiring and such

depending on installation you will be subject to plenum rules for fire/ toxic smoke (has to do with wire sheathing)

  3. leviton makes an outlet that comes blank and lets you add various data/AV connectors. I dont think you can mix power in with that though.
