Seeking Recommendation for Front Courtyard Tree
We want to put a square planter (28″ cube) in the recessed courtyard at the front of our b’stone. Can anyone recommend a small, flowering tree to put in it? The spot gets full sun. Thanks.

With a container that’s only 28″ alot of trees wont get very big anyway because of the restriction…a japanese maple needs part shade.
pretty polly: how do you know what kind of tree the city’s putting in? is this one that you’ve requested with that form for your sidewalk?
Make sure you read how big the tree gets. A magnolia, though a beautiful tree gets quite large and will block a lot of light from the house. A weeping cherry is a more appropriate size as may the Japanese Lilac tree with which I am unfamiliar. I am putting a self-pollinating dwarf cherry in the front of my house: flowers, fruit, nice bark year round and it doesn’t get too tall. Ordered it from Miller’s Nurseries online. Maples are also gorgeous and come in many amazing colors. I also have a Crepe Myrtle in my backyard which I adore. I used to have a pink dogwood in my old garden and was crazy about that too. A redbud is also lovely. You can always do a google search for specimen trees and see what you get. Yeah for Spring!!
In a full sun area, a japanese maple would be nice, providing color throughout the season, as opposed to just when something else flowers.
I think that a weeping variety adds a lot of interest when planting a small tree. Because of their shape they are beautiful in bloom or in winter. Think about a weeping cherry, or redbud.
Lilacs are awesome but another small tree/large bush is the crepe myrtle. They have these beautifullblooms that are amazing. Some people claim they don’t do well in the north east but i have one in my backyard which is fairly sunny and its doing extremely well.
The city is putting a Japanese Lilac Tree right in front of my house in the next few weeks. It’s a small tree and supposed to smell lovely.
Also a small, late blooming magnolia (like a Jane Magnolia) might be good — Gorgeous flowers, you just have to make sure you feed it with an acidic fertilizer.
