Does anyone have a contractor recommendation? My husband and I just bought a co-op apartment in Park Slope and are planning to do some minor renovations. We just got a quote from someone. It was clear he didn’t want to take our “small” job, so he built in a huge premium. I guess he figures he would make a ton of money if we were stupid enough to agree to his estimate. I have included a list of the work that we need done. I would love any advice you may have.

Remove old cabinets and pedestal sink
Install new kitchen cabinets and back splash
Install new track lights in kitchen
Install new vanity in bathroom
Refinish floors

  1. So do you mean to say that Saar’s work was not good?
Why is it fraudlent for him to use your recommendations as part of his website? Unless what you said was not true. I am confused, do you think his work was good?

  2. I was the original poster for the comments recomending Saar Kopolovich, however I posted those comments back in December 2006 while work was in progress on our Park Slope brownstone. How pathetic is it that he appears to be copying and pasting those comments now on this site as some fraudulent add for his services.

  3. Good contractors get jobs through recommendations, not craigslist. You are right, you get what you pay for. This site is here so people can learn from the mistakes others make. So my suggestion: don’t get a contractor from craigslist. Ask around and get recommendations from friends and acquaintances. Half of the people on craigslist are frauds and hacks. So, if you want to put your renovation in the hands of someone who does not come recommended by anyone you know, by all means, go for it.

  4. SF stands for SuperviserFor “CL”.I presume.
$19500 sounds fair for a good quality job from an insured and licensed contractor.
Stop trashing contractors just for the heck of it.
You have to pay the price for a good job otherwise you just have to sufer the consequences and at the end pay the price to do it the right way. And believe ME I know what I’m talking about.

  5. NEVER, EVER find a contractor on craigslist. We did that and have regretted every bit of it. If someone is not good enough to find work through referrals and must advertise for jobs on craigslist, there is a reason for it.

We fired the CL contractor and got a real one:
    Arnie Rodriguez (917) 407-3545

They are insured and did an excellent job on our kitchen and other miscellaneous items. We had IKEA cabinets installed, etc.

  6. My contractor did similiar work in my coop,(Im a first time purchaser as well) New floors in kitchen, remove old cabinets, install new, pedestal sink in bathroom, medicine cabinets, paint. His work in the kitchen is excellent. The paint job was ok, but I think my low end budget had an influence on the final product. But trustworthy contractor who is responsive to your needs Stewart Greene 347 245 5594.

  7. I posted a request for a similar request on this a while ago. We had received some overpriced (in my opinion) estimates to do the the following:
    1. assemble & install ikea kithcen cabinets
    2. do a subway tile backsplash
    3. move pipes for the sink and gas lines
    4. install a sink garbage disposal
    5. paint the entire parlor floor
    6. refinish the hardwood floors

There were of course a bunch of other nits & nats. Someone reccomended looking on Craigslist. Among a number of other proposals, we received one from a guy named Saar Kopolovitch. He is in the process of of doing this job for us. He managed a plumber to move some pipes, a painter to repair and paint the walls and someone else to do the floors. He pays everyone and manages them while he focuses on the kitchen. So far so good and he seems trustworthy. The price for all of that was originally $6k but it has gone up to $7.2k as we made some changes. Compared with other quotes which were in the $18k range. One cost this did not included was the counter tops which we went a bit higher end on – Icestone $96 psf cut and installed ($3,400).

    $6,400 – Ikea Kitchen (w/frig, d/w, micro & range)
    $3,400 – Icestone counters
$2,500 – misc (dimmers, swithc plates, track lights, paint, polyurethane, etc)
    $7,200 – Labor

    $19,500 – Total

We are about ready for the floors to be completed, but so far so good. We are pleased with our contractor so far. His number is 917-803-1465 (Saar Kopolovitch).
