Hi,

Has anyone built a sleeping loft? Not a freestanding one, a permanent feature. I have very high cielings in my kids bedrooms (they’d be 10+ y.o. when we do this), would like to give them more space. I can’t figure it out from the dob website, what are the requirements for ventilation, ladders/stairs, railings, fire protection? I know it can be done, there are lofts all over the place in studios. TIA!

  1. Hi,
Can anyone let me know which section of building code I can find information regarding sleeping lofts and strorage lofts?

From what I was told from our coop board, in order to call a space a storage loft, it has to have a ceiling height less than 5feet. Is this true?

  2. You have to be careful with building lofts, because unless the space under the loft is only storage you are adding square footage to your apartment, which gets tricky with the DOB. Of course, you can always call the space under the loft storage, regardless of what it is used for.
