A tree at the corner of our driveway and sidewalk has lifted the blue stones set at its base and is doing some damage to the drive & sidewalk. It’s in pretty bad shape & I am wondering how I should handle this when spring rolls around. Do you remove the stone, trim the tree roots to get a level surface & re-lay the blue stone? I don’t want to hurt the tree but it can’t be safe to have such a large old tree with so much of its roots above ground.
Call an arborist. I recommend Hollis Fitch of Prospect Tree. He’s listed in the phone book. He removed a tree from our backyard and has done tree-trimming for us. He knows his stuff.

The tree is on MY property. It borders the sidewalk but not on the Street side. It’s my tree, the lifted blue stone is on the path to my backyard, my expense etc. I am just wondering how I go about fixing it … do I trim the roots? Anyone know how this problem is dealt with? I want to keep tree healthy but its roots are a good 5 to 8 inches above ground at the base and radiating out about 3 feet.
The Parks Department is responsible for street trees. You could get a summons for operating on it yourself. The first poster is right, call 311.
The damage is at this point mostly on my property so I doubt they will do anything. (Original Poster)
Call 311. The city has a program specifically to handle sidewalks damaged by street trees.
