in my back yard i have a tree that has fallen and is threatening to lean on some cables running along the back of the property (about 10 ft up, are these power lines or phone/tv?). the tree is not yet touching anything, but it’s not gonna get any straighter, either. on top of that, there is one of those old ladder-shaped clothesline hangers in the back that has broken off its base and is resting IN BETWEEN two of the cables (also not actually touching the wires).

if that weren’t enough, the neighbors’ yard has some sort of vine that has grown all over the cables as well, and the vines have started to make their way across the wires into my yard.

SO, my question is, who do i call? i don’t know what the cables are for, so i don’t know if i should get Con Ed involved (not that i want to). but i’m not sure who can help me remove all the offending materials (tree, vines, clothesline thingy). anybody got any ideas?

  1. thanks for the responses. so it sounds like the tree can be dealt with, but i still gotta figure out how to get rid of the clothesline hanger. it rusted off its base and the previous owners leaned it against the back wall so that it is threaded between the two cables. i guess i’ll see if the tree guys can recommend somebody to remove it as well … unless somebody else here has any recommendation!

  2. very unlikely it’s coned… i’ve never seen
power lines in the back of houses. Most of time
they are underground, but a few spots in
brooklyn still have the old fashioned power lines
    high in the street.
what you see are cable and phone. Usually
those guys don’t do anything about it until
it breaks, and then they’ll just run another line
around another part of the tree.

  3. I have a tree in my backyard with wires travelling around it. I tried calling con ed with hopes of getting some free tree trimming. Wishful thinking. I used Wayne Morris 718-361-7627. I don’t think he takes out trees though, trims them.

  4. The lines are probably Verizon and cable and if you call Verizon, they will tell you that the tree is the problem of the person whose land it is on. Our neighbor’s tree snapped in high wind with part landing on all the wires in the back and Verizon wouldn’t come out until the tree was taken care of.

Call Family Tree Service-718.698.2725. they just cut a large tree down on my other neighbor’s property and did a good job.
