thoughts on Southern edge of park slope?
we are considering moving to 14th Street in Park Slope, but don’t know much about the area. Any thoughts? Specifically, we are considering near the park. Safe? Value? Etc… We only know the North slope, so any thoughts on the South slope would be greatly appreciated. Is this even still ocnsidered Park Slope? thanks

14th Street between 8th and PPW is in the Park Slope Historic District, so designated in 1973. No mention of Staten Island in the designation report.
14th Street is hardly Staten Island. The park ends at 15th Street; seems like a no-brainer that the streets that Slope down from the Park are safely within Park Slope.
14th Street between 7th Ave. and Park is definitely part of Park Slope and was even when I lived there in the mid 1980s. It didn’t used to be nearly so upscale, but it was safe even then. the only drawback is that you travel via F train, which never bothered me much, but does some people. It’s one of the safest trains, but sometimes slow.
I’m not sure there’s much upside now, as prices for many years have been quite high. But a very fine place to live.
I guess park slope is whereever the gentrifiers are. Street numbers have little to do with it. Soon park slope will extend to staten island. It’s a state of mind.
I used to live in the north Slope, but moved last year to the south Slope — to 14th Street, actually.
Pros:
• closer to the park
• better mix of services on lower Seventh Aven than more northern reaches
• my block is very neighborly
• slightly easier parking
• PS 107’s a good school
Cons:
• only F (OK, the R too) rather than B/Q and 2/3
• just that much further from Manhattan
• houses tend to not be as wide as in the North Slope
I generally like the feel of the south Slope (that is, below 9th Street) better than the north Slope, in the same way I prefer the shops of Fifth Avenue to the shops of Seventh Avenue, all else equal. For me, there’s more “life” there.
Bring your kevlar !!!
I’ve lived on Berkeley Place, 7th Street, and 15th Street, all between 6th & 7th Avenues, and all else being equal, my preference would be to live on 15th Street. It’s quieter and less crowded, and it’s easier to park over here. My perception is that it’s definitely safer here than in the North Slope (which I would define as being close to Flatbush). I don’t know what you mean by “all the amenities.” On 7th Ave between 9th and 15th Streets, there are quite a few restaurants, including a couple of really good ones; there are bars, there’s a drugstore, a toystore, and several overpriced little clothing & gift boutiques just like you find in the rest of the Slope. There’s a supermarket on 9th Street and several deli/bodega type places along 7th.
I meant 14th street, near Prospect Park (ie between 7th and 8th), but I would love to hear about the entire area (ie 8th street to 15th and 5th Ave to 8th Ave). The more info, the better….
OP, when you say “North Slope” do you mean 4-5th Aves or closer to Flatbush? Just clarifying, because some folks have the misconception that North Slope is the Flatbush end since south is the other end. It would make more sense that way, but what can ya do?
