Can anyone recommend a good book about rehabing brownstones? We just bought a beautiful brownstone in Bedstuy. It needs a lot of work and we want to make sure we do it right. (Kitchens, bathrooms, detailing, floors, etc)

Thanks for any and all help!

  1. Not sure but every Brownstoner should pick up a copy of Bricks and Brownstone: History of the NY Row House. The book is $75 and is available at Brownstone Books on Lewis Ave.

  2. Old House Journal was started in the 1970’s by Clem Labine, a Park Slope brownstoner who found that there was little information available to help him renovate his house. The early issues of the magazine were only 8 or 10 pages stapled together with 3 holes for a binder. OHJ later published The Old House Journal Compendium, which reprints all of these early issues. I’m told it is out of print, but you could check on Ebay or Amazon, and keep an eye out in old bookshops.

In the meantime, This Old House also put out a book called Homeowner’s Manual, which may also be out of print, as I bought it on sale at B & N a few years ago. In general, most books on home repair will give you the basics. Try the books put out by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for specific books on period lighting, plasterwork, etc. There are many coffee table books on Victorian, Arts and Crafts houses, as well as interesting books on decorating with salvaged goods, and old houses in general. Browse through the home decorating section at Barnes and Noble or Borders. These books always give me ideas, and provide lots of great pictures of period homes and features.

I bought most of my restoration, and old house books years before I was able to buy my house, so I have many books that are now out of print, but turn up quite often on ebay for not a lot of money. I can post a list of favs if someone is interested.
