We are doing some work on our house – plumbing for a new bathroom, and adding an electric meter. Our electrician is filing with Con Edison and the city for the new meter and the city will have to come inspect when the work is done. We have not however filed for the plumbing work. My concern is that when the city comes to inspect the electric it might be clear we have had other work done without a permit. The electrician assures us that electic inspectors care only about electric systems and won’t be concerned with anything else in the house. Is this true? Or are am I setting myself up here for trouble?
If you are adding a new bathroom, it needs to be filed (and thus the work needs to be performed by a licensed contractor). If you are only replacing fixtures in an existing bathroom, it does not need to be filed, but you should still use a licensed professional. Going cheap causes problems.
Get off the high horse Anon 6:24,
Licensed doesn’t mean jack. The bottom line is that the finished product is done right. I save a hell of a lot of money (probably 50%) using non-licensed but very experienced plumbers. I’ve used them for years without any problem.
yes it is true the electric inspector will only look at the electrical work. But if you are doing new plumbing it should be inspected. Is the plumber liscensed and putting proper vents in for each new waste line? Are they using no hub pipe or pvc?
