We are doing some minor renovations on our new house. Because most of this is being done by ourselves or by friends we have stuff to get rif of (countertop, sink, etc.) Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get rid of it? – will the city pick it up? – who can we hire to take it away or perhaps maybe recycle it? it isn’t enough to warrent getting a huge dumpster…

  1. You can try John Kerry. His website is http://www.topspeedenterprises.com I think. His number is 917 749 3930. He has run all our construction garbage for about the past 3 years since we started gut renovating our house in C. Heights and is a good guy. He happened also to run trash for the guy who did our stairs recently who we liked a lot.

  2. I am in the process of renovating a bathroom and did quite a bit of demolition. I went to Home Depot and boght 4 mil thick garbage bags and left them on the street in manageable increments. I made sure that nothing sharp was protruding, cut up drywall into smallish pieces, cut steel framing studs into 2 or 3 foot lengths and bundled them for recycling, etc. I even left a door out and they took that. As long as you’re fairly reasonable about quantity and the bags aren’t too heavy, they will take it.

  3. I threw out a sink cabinet and cast iron sink on Fri. Assuming no one picked it up( it was dirty and in bad shape so I doubt it) Recycling took the sink and trash took the cabinet. I threw away a formica backsplash a couple weeks ago. No problems but I cut it in half (It was 11′)

  4. OP here – thanks, I will check out bignyc.org and craigslist.
to 8:05 – sorry, there is nothing original (i wish) – just some old not so nice formica…

  5. Sanitation has details about what you can leave out as far as construction debris. But if the sanitation guys think you are you using a contractor and throwing stuff out the curb they won’t take it. I’ve called 311 and asked about leaving half of a sliding glass door. I did what they told me and they didn’t pick it up. I called 311 and they scheduled a bulk pickup. It went that day. Sanitation can be picky.

  6. If you have any detail original to the house, I may be interested in hauling it for you. 😉 Talk to your sanitation guys/gals about taking the stuff. Talk to them with your wallet, if you know what I mean. We got rid of 80% of our rubbish this way on our last renovation.

  7. check out bignyc.org for anything that may be salvageable. Also, post on the free section of craigslist.

For the trash, there are plenty of rubbish removal companies that will come take it away, you don’t need to get a dumpster. Check the services section of craiglist, phonebook, or search here, there are tons of them. If you have it all bags/bundled up and at the curb they will charge less than if they have to get a few guys to haul the stuff out of your house.
