Does anyone have experience removing paint from brownstone?

I want to strip paint from the underside of my brownstone’s stoop (the garden floor entrance). It’s chipping and there’s a patch that’s powdery and decaying a bit…

I’ve read the previous posts about the Brownstone Authority, etc. however I’m a bit of a DIYer (read: masochist)…

Has anyone had any experience with paint removal from brownstone?

Does anyone know of any chemical strippers that won’t damage the brownstone underneath?

I’ve been told by the local paint shop to use Rock Miracle on it, but I’m curious about other opinions… it’s not an ornamental area or anything, and the area is hidden from view, but I’d hate to cause any permanent damage.

  1. If the stone is damaged allready don’t spend your money twice and get it refinished.
You said is chipping and that there is a patch, to me it sounds better to restore it.
    Tell me I’m wrong.

  2. be careful as the paint probably contains lead. We have the same problem & are looking to cement render over the top – seal it all in while still allowing the stone to breath.

  3. It is a huge undertaking. I had mine done professionallly and they used Peel Away. Water soluable, covered with paper and then power washed off. No fumes. But be sure to cover all other surfaces including neighbors stoops. The powerwashing part throws stuff all over.

It depends what type of paint, how many layers, stone condition etc…
Either way,be extra carefull if you decide to go for it.
