Does anyone have the name of an honest company which will test for lead paint? And the cost estimate for this? Or does home depot sell any reliable kits for this kind of thing? Thank you much.

  1. I’ve used the home-testing kits in my work from time-to-time and they seem to be reliable. If there’s a ton of lead paint in your home I’d suggest going with a company that specializes in it’s removal (and that’s not us…)

    Dow+Company
    precision wallpaper hanging & painting

  2. fyi: if you bring in a third party to inspect the lead, you will be obligated by law to disclose in writing to all future tenants that you are aware of the presence of lead in your building.

if your property was built before 1970, assume there is lead. those self-testing kits are pretty good at giving positives. then either cover with encapsulate (pinchik’s) or remove safely and responsibility (see archives of this site for suggestions). i would recommend http://www.thesilentpainremover.com, a HEPA mask and vacuum and lots of plastic and blue tape. good luck. its one of the painful and painstaking responsibilities of owning an old home (if that is what you have).

  3. You can by a kit at Home Depot or Loews….sort of like a white magic marker that you rub on the area of concern…..I believe that they are pretty reliable and they will be much cheaper than a home inspection from a company. If you are testing paint in a building that was built before 1970 you will probably have lead paint somewhere. Just make sure you are careful in the removal/painting over process if you plan on sanding the area

  4. Try:
    Accredited Lead Inspection
    http://www.epafirm.com
    516-944-5323

Ask for Steve or Lou. They will hook you up.

I heard a rumor that if you call the EPA (the government agency), they will send you a free lead testing kit. Or maybe that’s just water. Not sure.

  6. There is a company called “Lead Investigation” 54 Willoughby St, 4th Fl. 718-855-2200 that does this work.

I haven’t used them directly but they were used by the seller of a building I am buying when doing the lead testing work. They appear to have all of their certifications, etc. in order.
