I need to find someone who can cut a circle in my basement window so I can vent my dryer and keep the alarm tape, that wraps around the perimeter of the glass, intact. I can’t figure out what to search for on google. I imagine I can find fittings at HD to secure the vent … Any suggestions? Anyone know someone who can do this? Cutting a big hole in the basement wall of a 100yo house is probably a very bad idea so I thought the window would work. Eventually we’ll get new basement windows… so this is a quick temp fix. thank you!

  1. It’s a four inch hole — you’re house will not fall down. Just don’t do it right next to a door/window.
I don’t see how it’s going to impact the overall appearance or value of the house – just put in somewhere inobtrusive. I don’t think a dryer is going to raise too many eyebrows. It’s not like, say, for example, painting a parquet floor….

  2. can’t you disable the alarm/remove the tape while you swap the glass for wood? in terms of maintaing and increasing a home’s value, wouldn’t a permanent vent hole add to the value from a functional standpoint? i was at a loss as how to vent my dryer when i realized i had an old coal chute coming into the basement. problem solved! i bet many older homes have a similar entrypoint.

  3. Bob,

Problem is the security alarm tape that runs the perimeter of the 2 panes of glass. Would have to find someone to cut a hole in the glass so the window woudl stay alarmed. Do you really think cutting an opening in exterior wall is okay?? I care about this old house so much. Just the thought of doing that makes me cringe… but if it’s really okay in terms of preserving the history & value of the house I’d start to consider it as an option… Thanks

  4. T think a really professional approach would be to cut an opening in the exterior wall, but FWIW, I’ve gotten away for years with a board inserted above the upper sash in which I cut a hole. If you don’t have a double hung window in your basement, you might consider replacing the glass in that one window with wood, especially since you say this is just a temporary expedient.
