We have original windows which are lovely and we have restored, but the original casings they are in need replacing, for sure. We got a quote for 2 windows- $1000, labor only, This includes a new sill, sash, jamb- all window frame. Does this sound reasonable?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a good and inexpensive person to install new windows (including casings) in case it is just too expensive to fix our old ones?

Thank you~

  1. Check into a book called “working windows”. It is by far the most concise reference for restoring historic windows. It will tell you everything you need to know to do it yourself or determine how much work is involved to do it properly.

  2. We had a guy come to give an estimate for historically acceptable storm windows and he told us that if we ever needed to replace our original windows, it would cost us $1000 each. We got Allied Storm windows, installed them ourselves and we’re now in the process of restoring each window at the rate of about 1 per year.
