We have mice in our brownstone. After trying the glue traps for a while and having some luck catching the little bastards, we decided to hire exterminator. We have patched many holes behind stoves and other areas and put down the poison. Since our tenants have pets, the poison is in special housing so they do not get to it.
My concern is what if the cat eats the poisoned mouse? The exterminator tells me that he should not be in danger, but I am concerned. We have also bought RatZappers and they work wonders at the apts where we have no pets. But I am affraid to out them where the cat is since he can get zapped as well. The mice seems to be too smart for just glue traps. What can we do?
Any advice is welcome.
CATS do eat mouse! Our house is surrounded by fields and I have seen my cat Boris eat hundreds of the dam things! this in England though. US cats might be lame!
Cats can get secondary poisoning. Rodenticide poisoning is not uncommon at all in dogs and cats, although I’m not sure how often it happens by secondary poisonning (after ingesteing a dead rodent). If the rodenticide was an anticoagulant, treatment is easy (vitamin K). If you think your cat might have been exposed, see your vet ASAP. Otherwise the cat could die of internal bleeding.
We got Pest Offence from a catolog called DR. Leonards Healthcare Catalog. Phone # 800-785-0880 Item #81810 at $29.95 each.
Good Luck!
Nick
Where do you get Pest Offence?
My cat eats mice–everything but the entrails
Cat eat mice. It is a given. House cats do not usually eat mice. Fact.
Question: Do you know of a cat getting sick or poisoned by eating poisoned mouse?
Do you recommend using RatZappers around the house if you have cats?
Thank you for the input, but I do not belive in any sonic devices.
“I’ve never seen a cat actually consume a mouse although I’m sure they would if they weren’t fed.”
Hunting mice is instinctual for cats. But they have to be tought by their mothers to eat them. Our VERY well fed cat eats mice whole, as did his predicessor. OTOH, our first cat was a great mouser, but she’d run around with a live mouse in her mouth until we took her outside and forced her to release the beast so it could run off.
I’ve seen a country farm cat eat a mouse whole after they’d finished playing with it, but most cats I’ve known will bring it to their owner as a present.
In my experience, traps are census takers– they let you know you have mice. But they’ll never get all the mice. For that you need poison. You also need to seal cracks in the foundation and around doors and windows.
For those who worry about mice dying in the walls and stinking up the place while they rot, I ask this: What happens when they die of natural causes? Do you think a little mouse hearse comes and takes the dead mouse to the little mouse funeral home?
Those electronic devices that chase away pests seem interesting– I always thought they were bogus. Do they bother dogs?
As far as using poison goes, YES it may transfer to any animal that eats the poisoned mice. Now usually, cats or dogs will kill a mouse but NOT eat it, however if they did (and they sometimes albeit rarely do swallow sumptin) they could also be poisoned.
The sonic device recommended above seems to work wonders from what I’ve heard.
Good luck!.
