Whats the cheapest way to replace standard windows sizes 28 1/2 and 32? Should I go to Home Depot and get new ones and pay someone to install or should I call a company. Any recommendations for reasonable window company?

Thank you.

  1. I was talking specifically about wood windows…

If you are replacing the window with a “Pella precision fit” or “Marvin insert” which are meant to be installed into the existing frames – THERE ARE NO “STOCK” SIZES.

If you want to save $ with a standard size (which means getting a regular window that is meant for full frame replacement) and retro-fit it, you better know what you’re doing.

Regardless, my point is that you should consider the material first before you drive yourself nuts with standard sizes & all the rest of the details. There is a huge difference in price between a quote for vinyl windows & one for wood windows.

    Other factors…

With Pella & Marvin (I can’t speak for other companies) the more expensive product lines simply differ in the options that are available. Balances, glass, hardware are generally all the same among their product lines. It has to do with production costs, not quality. The least expensive line just has the least amount of options, including limited sizes.

Glass thickness, hardware function, balances – all the same.

I have to take issue with your statements.

    1) IIRC from the renovations I have done (My better half likes to move after we renovate) MOST companies offer standard sizes, ie. Andersen, Pella, Marvin etc. Replacement companies (vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass) that make “box type” replacements fabricate on the 1/4″. Tract homes from the 20’s up can take advantage of the “stock sizes”. Unfortunatly most brownstones, limestones etc. don’t fall into this category.

    2) What about glass, balance and hardware type, and performance? Do thes factor into the price? A Kia and a Benz will both get you there…

    3) Why not? With diy.net and websites of similar, windows are very simple.

    just my .02 YMMV

  3. There is no such thing as “standard size” windows. Every company has different standard sizes & if you are replacing a window, you need a window thats made to fit into that opening.

What affects price with windows has more to do with the material (Vynil, aluminum, wood, etc.)

From experience, I would be careful about who you have install your windows. Its not the kind of thing you just pick up @ home deopot & read the instructions – if you want it done right that is.
