I would like to buy some nice cast iron window guards for my top floor coop apartment in a Park Slope landmarked brownstone.
I have a small child, want to protect him, and yet have nice windows – I been looking at Architectural Iron Company in Milford, PA – Has anyone used them before? looks high quality…price/service?
Or does anyone have other suggestions or referrals?
PS – I’m aware that NYC landmarks will have to approve them since they will be on the front facade.
I don’t know anything about cast iron window guards, but if you’re willing to consider the regular indoor metal ones, I would suggest Guardian Angel II guards (you can find them online). They have a large array of sizes, they look a cut above the normal cheap-ish guards, and have a (childproof, obviously) quick release mechanism in case of emergency. Cast iron bars make me nervous for just that reason – getting them off in a hurry in case of emergency.
I agree. Standard window guards are unobstrusive and easy to remove once your child is old enough for them to be unnecessary.
If you can get the NYC LPC Rowhouse Manual, see p5 to learn that no permit is required for installation of ‘regulation child guards’ among other things. If I were you I would go for a standard plain insert window guards – functional, innocuous and inexpensive. I guess you should call the city 311 to learn which ones are regulation.
