I live in a Fedders buildings. Well, okay, not even a Fedders building, more like a cheap knock-off of a Fedder’s building. I believe our air conditioner window unit holes are actually by “Freiderich”.

The apartment was rented to us with no air conditioners, just the window openings for them, so we had to purchase our own. Now that it’s winter, my landlord’s solution for insulation is to sheet rock over the openings from the inside. Since this would involve removing the air conditioners, I am against it. (We have nowhere to store them).

Doesn’t the landlord have an obligation to provide those outside covers for the wall ac units? And where can they be purchased if we have to end up dealing with this ourselves?

I realize there’s the temptation to mock me for living in a Fedders building, but please resist. We moved here so our kld wouldn’t get lead poisoning. Instead, she may freeze.

Thanks for any assistance!

  1. I hate rude people. If you have a through the wall A/C sleave and you bought the correct A/C to fit in the space (slides in and out with no gaps at top bottom or sides, you most likely won’t need any covers at all. If you wish you can call Fedders replacement parts service company, a company called CareCo at 217-347-6322 and ask for the insulated front or rear grill cover depending on whether you plan on taking the unit out or not. This information is based on units that do not stick out from the exterior wall, like window units do. If the unit is Friedrich you can call their customer service line at (210) 357-4400 or (800) 541-6645

  2. OMFG. You RENT. Live by the landlord’s rules, or move out. Go to a hardware shop, you idiot, where else did you think you’d buy an air-conditioner cover? Perhaps at the coffee shop? Yeah, maybe you should check there first.

    Dumbass.

  3. Slip the unit slightly out of the sleave and place a ring of foam insulation around the unit, then push it back into the wall. You can use a screw driver to push the insulation back in if it is sticking out in places. Close the “vent” or “Exhaust” if it’s open. Those units are meant to STAY in the sleave. Your landlord has a brand new building…whats he worried about heat loss? He sounds like a total tight wad. The covers that people are talking about are for window units not what you have.

  4. the landlord wants to sheetrock over your fedderhole? what’s up with that? as for covers, if you mean the silvery AC covers, they’re at searly every hardware store and they’re like 10 bucks. i live din such a place once, and it works well enough.

  5. If you supplied the a/c, then I don’t know why the landlord should have to store it. As long as you seal around the unit, why are you going to freeze? The mass of the unit — as long as there aren’t breezes coming through — should provide insulation. Being a bit paranoid….no??

  6. I believe you have to take the air conditioner out in order to put the covers on. When we had one of these, there were 2 covers, one outside and one inside. Between them, there was a square of that pink insulation stuff wrapped in a papery cover.

We stored the airconditioner under an end table and put a big cloth over the whole mess.
