Window and installer recommendations?

I am looking to replace the old windows in my co-op (in historic district). I dont know much about the options and am looking for some advice/opinions. Specifically, whare the big differences between vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, etc? Probably looking at about 6 windows, double or single hung. Also, I think it would be nice if they looked like wood, but not sure if that limits me too much. Any recommendations for window companies/models, etc? Also, if you could recommend an installer as well I’d appreciate it. Even though I am in historic district, I dont believe I am limited too much, except for the windows facing the street, which I might not replace if its too much a hassle.
Thanks in advance

If your house is Landmarked Marvin Integrity will not be approved. Marvin or Kolbe Units are best. They sell 2 ways sash Kits or Full units brick to brick.
Call EZTilt Or Heights Historic Window & Door see there add on this page they are good & will give you pricing & good advice. Owners of both companies a pleasure to deal with. Have both been doing great work in the hood for 25 years plus reputation is excellent.
Kolbe a little cheaper but more important will sell with factory finsihed landmark approved exterior colors. That makes them similar or a little more expensive but you do not have to deal with painter hanging out of window to paint the sash & possibly scratch the glass in the process.
thanks everyone. My windows are drafty, and in bad shape, they dont open all the way, wood is rotting, etc. Just want to start over. Anonymous at October 13, 2006 12:30: How much did the infiniti windows and installation cost you?
Thanks
Since you’re talking windows, I thought I would pass on this negative experience with JN Storm Windows and Doors at 4620 16th Ave Brooklyn. Please don’t use them. The windows they did install in our house we’re done well and of good quality. However, on the day of installation, we were asked to pay in full, which we did. They promised to return the next day with the bigger ladder to do the third floor and complete the job and have yet to return. This was almost a year ago…They have yet to return my call and have a myriad of excuses everytime I catch them on the phone.
Out of curiosity, are you’re old windows just drafty or are they in direpair. Just might be a hassle if trying to match the other windows in the coop if it is a historic property. What do the other apartments have?
Marvin Infinity replacement windows from Bay Ridge Windows and Doors. infinitywindows.com
They are pultruded fiberglass. There’s a finish called Everwood that looks like pine. We just got 12 and love them, though Bay Ridge was excellent to work with.
Do a search here on “windows” there are a bunch of postings with comments on the various companies. We used E-Z Tilt and are very pleased with the work. We did wood in the front and aluminum over wood in the rear, all Marvin though. IIRC they dont offer vinyl or fiberglass.
Cheers.
