Tree Pit Wrought Iron Fencing
I got my street tree last year and would like to install a wrought iron fence around it (that are common around older trees). Does anyone know where to get one … and have it installed? Thanks.

The “City” (actually the Borough Presidents office) did have a program called the Neighborhood Beautification Project, whereby the Parks Department installed tree guards. This program ceased 2 years ago and probably will not be repeated. Our block has been approved for these guards, but as of now, they have yet to be installed (We’ve been waiting for over a year).

you can request a street tree from the city. Not sure what’s entailed in terms of wait time, etc. You go through the department of forestry, which is part of the Parks & Recreation Dept. Per the website:
Any property owner may request a street tree. All street tree requests are taken through individual community board offices. Click here to display a map which will allow you to determine which Community Board you are in. Contact information for the community boards can be found here You may also call 311 and ask for the Mayor’s Assistance line to find the phone number of your respective community board.
Trees are planted on a first-come, first-serve basis. As the availability of trees, number of requests, and length of planting season is different each planting season, not all requests can be filled immediately. There may be up to one year’s wait before a request is fulfilled. Please be aware that obstacles such as underground utilities, low wires, building entrances, and light posts may prevent a new tree from being planted.

I have actually been looking into this myself.
I found a website called treesnyc.com that lists a number of vendors throughout the boroughs.
go to http://www.treesny.com/trees_pitguards.htm
I haven’t made the phone calls yet so I can’t speak to the prices, service, etc.
Good luck!
our block association had the city install one for each tree pit on our block for free. We all signed petitions asking to have them installed.
We had ours put in by the city. They sent us a menu of 3-4 options (each around $600-800 i think) and then came to install it. I forget which agency, but the menu came in the mail.
Try Vinnie’s Iron Works on Bergen & Boerum Place. Our wrought iron tree pit is heavy but is not connected to the ground. I’d recommend this type of enclosure since it moves rather than gets ruined when it gets hit by cars.
I don’t have an answer, but what do you mean you got your street tree? From the city? Details, please. Thanks.
