Stripping...my radiators, that is
I have radiators with lovely patterns on them. Currently they’re covered with a patina of rust and paint chips. I know that most folks just paint radiators, but I was wondering if there’s anything wrong with stripping, polishing, and sealing them. Are there any DIY radiator stripping solutions, e.g. vinegar or some other organic material?

I have some old radiator heaters if you are interested in buying. I am remodeling my home and I am putting in forced air. Do you know who would buy these?
Thanks!
I would second that. I posted a pic of one of my finished radiators recently. I used stripper, and putty knives, old screw drivers and dental picks to remove the paint. You really do not need high heat paint for hot water systems at least. So you can go for any of the oil based paints, eg., Rustoleum brand. DO NOT use water based/ latex paints for the first coat. It will rust. An easier way would be to have them sandblasted, but then you have to have them removed from the house and is not really a DIY thing. I have seen some people powerwash the paint away too. Check http://www.heatinghelp.com on The Wall. One of the posters, bronzed his radiators the old fashioned way.
I’ve stripped many radiators ( see “my brownstone” sunset park house ) If you have a steam system, it’s pretty easy to remove them so you can work on all sides. Just scrape away the chips. and use chemical paint stripper on the tough spots, steal wool & wire brush. If you want a less toxic chemical, you could use the Peal Away brand stripper and water. That should work well too. Once you have them really clean use a high quality radiator paint.
