Three of my friends and I are about to sign for a 4 Bedroom apartment. We have lived in Astoria queens but are not familiar with brooklyn. I know a few areas that are desired, such as park slope, and i have heard a few that are not, but I was wondering if anyone had any feelings about Prospect Heights. We are 4 guys around 25 years old and one of my roommates would be going to work at 1am every night and walking 5 minutes to the subway. So bascially I need to know if its safe. thanks

  1. My husband and I moved to PH from Brooklyn Heights. I wouldn’t say one was safer than the other. It depends on the commute home at night. In Brooklyn Heights, I had to walk 8 minutes from the subway, and I wouldn’t do it past 10 p.m. (as a woman; my husband would do it until midnight). Now, in PH, we live a block from the Eastern Parkway stop, and I would walk home at almost any hour. You still have to be alert; but if your commute is short, on well-lit streets, and on streets with traffic (people or cars), you should be fine at any hour.

I also agree with the other posters–Brooklyn Heights is beautiful; but for four guys, PH is much more fun.

  2. No matter where you live, crime knows NO boundaries and neither do the people who commit them. You could live in PH, BH, CG, or PS and be a crime victim going to work, coming home, or whatever. Who says it has to happen in PH? This is the world we live in. Reduce your chances of being a victim by being alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, no matter where you live.

  3. the issue here isn’t whether ‘4’ 25 year old males can take care of themselves, its whether ‘1’ alone can at 1am. I will say what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger, so short of being killed, this may be a life changing experience for you. If it proves to much a challenge, you can always walk away from the lease with enough notice..or just pay 2 rents, one in ph, the other to your parents for your bedroom back

  4. I wouldn’t sweat PH. Like previous posters wrote, if you don’t walk around with your head up your butt, you shouldn’t have any trouble. No one I know that lives there has had any trouble.

  5. Come on guys, you’re 25 years old! Man, when I was your age, I was coming home alone on the subway at 4am…out to the last stop in Coney Island after hanging out on Ave C. Drunk off my ass..in the mid 80’s…and I’m a chick. ALL of NY is completely safe these days, IMHO.

  6. I am a 30-something woman who lives in PH and who has frequently gotten home from work past 1 in the morning over the past 7 years. I can’t imagine a 20-something man would not feel safe here, although I agree it may depend on where in PH you live (I live close to Vanderbilt); if you are 5 mintues from Grand Army Plaza or Seventh Avenue subway stops, there should be no issue. In my opinion, proximity to the park, botanic gardens, museum, subways, diversity, etc. make it the perfect neighborhood. Plus new restaurants and bars are opening on Vanderbilt (and Underhill and Washington) all the time.
