I had some plumbers remove a toilet that was about to fall from the 2nd to the 1st floor. Now we don’t have a toiilet! So we’re considering putting one in the basement. The plumber advised me that I’ll have to build a platform. Any advice on who to hire for such a job? Can I buy a platform ready-made? And does anyone know who could frame out some simple walls for me to provide privacy?

Thanks for any advice!

  1. We’re renovating the second floor, so we’d like to hold off and do it right – replace or sister those rotted joists, etc. That’s why I’d like to know more about putting one in the basement.

We’re settling on a permanent toilet in the basement with pipes for an eventual sink hook-up, if we can come up with the cash.

I was quoted over $2000 by a reputable plumber. Does this sound normal?

  2. So, I gather you don’t want the damaged floor replaced? You don’t want a toilet on the 2nd floor? Depending on the placement of the waste line in your basement, the toilet could be awkward. I’m thinking it is because your plumber is asking for a platform, perhaps a step too? If you’re going to keep a toilet on the 2nd floor, I would think the fastest way to get a toilet is to put one back on the 2nd floor.

  3. Yeah. Real helpful, guy. Yes, we don’t have a toilet. It’s a three-family with the other apartments rented out. They’re in good condition, but ours is in less pristine shape, hence the near demise through rotted floors.

So, since anyone doesn’t seem to know what to do, it’s natural for me to ask the next question – Can I drop by your house to use yours?

We don’t actually live there, yet, but while we do work it would be nice to have a toilet. What should I know about installing one in the basement?
