I need to replace the skylight at the top of the stairwell in my house (the pane of glass that is inside the house, not the glass on the roof itself). Can anyone recommend a company other than Park Slope Glass to do this? (I called them for an estimate; guy said he would call the next day, haven’t heard from him nearly 2 weeks later.)

  1. I’m the original poster. Just wanted to give an update for anyone who searches the archives for skylight info. In the end Park Slope Glass had to send someone to my house twice in order to give me an estimate: after the second trip they told me it would cost $325 to fix a piece of tempered glass over the hole in my ceiling, or that they could come back for a third visit to measure for constructing me an entirely new skylight frame (which is what I had wanted them to measure for in the first place). I then called Freddie at Mega Glass, who told me to bring the existing frame in and he’d be able to fix a piece of glass over it that I could just place over the hole myself — more or less what Park Slope Glass was proposing to do for $325. He did it for thirty-nine dollars.

  2. Park Slope glass’ service has steadily declined since Rich and George sold. My folks used them for years, its a shame. I understand there is a new partner now, time will tell. Our roofer purchased our skylight from McDonald Roofing.

  3. I just looked into either replacing or reconditioning the stained glass window that sits below a skylight. It’s about the main staircase, so might be similar to what you’ve got.

We ended up cleaning and reconditioning, but in the process I came across Mega Glass and Sashes on 5th Avenue by Bergen (the guy’s name escapes me now). They seem to be an old style glass shop with stained and art glass, and they know what they’re doing but also have no frills prices.

We’re going to have them put tempered glass in our front doors.

    Anyway, good luck…

  4. I used a local contractor, Frank Vitrano, for a similar job (and lots of others) and was very happy with the result. You can reach him at 347-247-0644.
