I just bought an apartment in a prewar building in Propsect Heights at 175 Eastern Parkway. I’m want to rennovate the bathroom in its original prewar designs. Where can I see pictures of prewar bathrooms? I need to replace everything…floor and wall tiles, toilet, tub, sink, hardware, scones, etc.

Thanks.

  1. We are doing the vintage bath thing in Carroll Gardens and have found these sources helpful.

George Taylor Pluming – Go on in and chat with them. Invaluable.

http://www.vintagetub.com – new, but old looking

    http://www.vintagebathroom.com/ – really good

Old Good Things on 24th street in Manhattan – good vintage

Be careful. Sizes vary and not everything is easy. Most vintage can be adapted… But for a price.

  2. I’ve worked in many apartments in your neighborhood. You should consider simply asking around or putting up a sign in your building about checking out someone’s un-renovated bathroom in the flesh.

There are lots of them out there. Pink and black or yellow and green tiles, built-in ironing boards/hampers, clawfoot tubs…etc.

  3. The classic old bathrooms might have white and black hexagonal or checked tiles and pedestal sinks with white subway tiles and shaped mirrored medicine cabinets and lots of shiny chrome accessories. I saw a great sink in Eddies (pedestal white) in great shape and very beautiful retro. I want it but don’t need it. (Eddie is on Greene and Grand – open 12-6 Tuesday to Saturday – he’s great and sells architectural salvage – reasonable too!). I don’t know where you could see pictures of such bathrooms but you might get someone to post some pictures here or Gardenweb.com. Even in some of the tile/bathroom/ places you can see pictures of these classic/retro bathrooms. Or Old House Journal or get a catalog of Renovators Supply. I think they have stuff on line – you could google it for all kinds of reproduction antique accessories for an old house. Good luck.
