Marvin windows issue
Here’s a question for all of you who have gone ahead and purchased the Marvin Ultimate double hung wood windows. We are worried about the vinyl jambs on these windows. Are they noticable? Also, we are tempted to spend the big bucks to get ours made in mahogany. Any opinions about whether it’s worth it?

Why didnt you try Kolbe & Kolbe? KOLBE-Kolbe.com There Sterling double hung unit does not show any jambliner. Heights Historic Window & Door have a showroom in Dumbo & are the reps for there product & I have seen there units on Sidney place. They designed there unit to completely hide the track mechanism. They are much less than Parrett (although Parrett is beautiful if you can afford it) Kolbe make Mahogany & curved sash also.
They also make a weight & chain double hung which you can see on South Portland street #’s 41 & 43 massive units. There sign is still up there I think not sure though.
There add is on this page they are doing a lot of work in the Heights & Fort Greene.

From a historical standpoint, nothing can come close to a weight and chain (Parrett, Marvin, etc.). From a budget standpoint, an Ultimate double hung. Marvin’s weight and chain is beautiful, but from a price point roughly 2x that of Parrett.
Hey Bill, which would you recommend for wooden windows in a landmark district, Marvin ultimates or Parrett? We hate the idea of vinyl jamb liners. Also, do tell more about the Marvins with chains!!!!!!!!
Mike,
We carry Parrett as well as Marvin, usually it is for products Marvin won’t fabricate or that would be too costly for them to build. Marvin does offer a weight and chain as well. Give us a call (212.977.3090) we will send you literature on both. We also have a showroom in Manhattan and should have the Parrett displays up there soon.
Where can I find a Parrett dealer?
sorry, I’m the above poster. My email is dthowe56@yahoo.com.
very interesting! I’d love to see how they came out! If you feel comfortable, please email me with your info. Also, how did they stack up on price?
The vinyl jambs were enough to get me to look elsewhere. I ended up installing new windows with weights and chains by Parrett.

Fwiw, the vinyl jambs on the Marvin Ultimates are much more slender and less noticeable than on the old Marvin Magnums. It still irks me, however, that Marvin doesn’t offer the vinyl in brown or black (as well as putty or white). We have the MU’s in our front parlor and painted them dark brown because we couldn’t stretch to mahogany. I’m pretty fanatical about this stuff but I have to admit while the vinyl bothers me a little, it really doesn’t scream at me — I mean we all have those things we can hardly stand to live with, for me, this isn’t one of them. When we get MU’s for our bedrooms, we will be able to paint them white so the vinyl will “disappear” into the overall color scheme.
