Keyspan Vs. ConEd

This is probably a really stupid question but it’s proving surprisingly difficult to answer. I am buying an apartment near Park Slope and need to set up gas and electric service, which I haven’t had to deal with for the past few years as utilities were included at my current rental. Can you get both gas and electric from ConEd? Or do you have to get gas from keyspan and elec from ConEd? I’ve read that they are part of the same company anyway. I’ve also heard I might have 2 separate gas bills– one for cooking gas and one for the apartment’s self-contained heating unit? And then there are these ESCOs… I’m so confused. If ConEd offers both gas and elec, I’m tempted to just do it all in one account with them and forget all the shopping around– any opinions on whether this is a big mistake? Thanks.
In some areas you can get both services however in Park Slope you will need to deal with both Keyspan (gas) and Coned (electric). Escos give you options to go green. Just call Keyspan and Coned and they will explain everything.
we also get two bills from Keyspan, one for the cooking gas and one for the heat & hot water gas.
we have a separate meter for each, hence, two bills. we’ve tried to get the meters combined,
but to no avail. the plumbers we’ve contacted
apparently don’t want to touch the job? don’t really know. problem is, we pay for cooking gas
that we don’t use cuz there’s a minimum charge.
oh well…whaddayagonnado?!
it depends how many gas meters you have..
We get two separate Keyspan bills, one for cooking gas and one for hot water and heating gas. Not sure why. Tried to change it to one bill but they said no.
In brooklyn, ConEd handles electric, Keyspan handles gas. They are not affiliated with one another.
Keyspan bills every 2 months and you will get a single bill for both cooking and heating gas. ConEd bills once a month for all of your electric.
ESCOs allow you to purchase your energy (electric or gas) from a 3rd party although it will still be delivered by ConEd and Keyspan collectively. You probably won’t save much if anything by switching to an ESCO although you can use them to purchase green power from windfarms and other alternative energy sources. You can decide to do this at any time, either way you will still need your coned and keyspan accounts.
It’s all much easier than it sounds, call up both coned and keyspan and open an account with both you really don’t have any choice about that.
