I know we have discussed environmental companies that remove lead paint ad nauseum, but does anyone know of a furniture stripper company that would pick up and strip a vintage metal cabinet that has lead paint? A friend started to remove it herself and freaked out when she learned it had lead. Bklyn or Manhattan OK. Thanks.

  1. Yes. But it may not be worth your time if you can have them dipped and stripped for under a hundred bucks. Invest your time in finishing.

  2. Stripping the cabinet is safe as long as the work is done “wet” and appropriate clean-up (plastic on floor, etc.) is done. Use a stripper like Peel-Away #1 (friendliest) or dichloromethane (fastest, but definitely use outside or in a well ventilated room). Both are available at home depot. I would clean up the metal surface with some fine grade steel wool after that.

  3. Rick is right. Lead is only a problem if it is injested(stomach). If inhaled (lungs) it is less of a problem as it will disipate. That is why chemical stripping is the only approved method of removing lead based paints. A tank is preferable. Try Degamba.

  4. I don’t think lead paint is a problem if you use chemical stripper. The problem is in a dry form. The paint should not be sanded and you shouldn’t eat it no matter how hungry you may get.
