our contractor has had one person working alone on our kitchen renovation for 5 or 6 weeks now. He’s done good work and gone above and beyond the call on several occassions. does anyone have any advice on whether or how to tip this person?

  1. I tip all the guys my contractor has working for him throughout (usually two or three), but just $100 at the end of the job. It’s just a drop in the bucket compared with what I’m spending overall, and it has paid off in many ways – gratefulness of the workers, their help in fixing things around the house not included in the project, etc.

  2. although he spent 6 weeks doing your kitchen, and it appears he went over and above..that is essentially his job. No tipping should be necessary. I work for an investment bank in IT, and I wish every time I fixed a problem someone handed me a tip (I’d be a millionaire 3x’s over).

  3. 0.05 of the total cost of the project.Let say $12000 = $600 That will be fine or right on the money. Not short not too much.
Believe me.7 years of good luck will follow you.

  4. Tipping a laborer is not expected, but always appreciated for outstanding service. Give the tip directly to the worker, but you can let the contractor know you did so. He will be pleased to know that you were so happy with the job. Do not try to hire his workers on the side – how sleazy!!

  5. I’ve been in that situation before and I would slip him some money directly in thanks for his good work. If you give it to the contractor he may not get it, and he sounds like he deserves it!

  6. You can always see if this guy would be willing to work for you sepearately…he might have his own side business…or refer him to your friends.
