smoke detector requirement for 8 unit building
We are new owners of a 8 unit building. Can anyone advise us on requirements for installing smoke detectors and who pays (tenant or landlord) …in each apartment, in the foyer and hall areas, basement etc. There is a lot of info about CO2 alarms but very little supprisingly about Fire Alarms. thanks

What about common areas within our building …four floors of common area hallway and stairs plus a foyer entering out onto the street.
You can also use the combination alarms that are for both smoke and carbon monoxide.
Here’s a link to the NYC Rent Guidelines Board page about smoke alarms – seems the landlord is responsible for their installation, tenants for their upkeep (ie changing batteries). You can pass on a charge of up to $10 per smoke detector if the detector is battery-operated.
