recommendations of contractors?
So far we have gotten very high (for us) estimates from contractors for addition and renovation of a brownstone. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonable contractor? We have an architect who will be the site manager. What would we expect per square foot?

Have you spoke to Harry @ Dewees-Mellor? Lives locally, does local projects with local architects.
Don’t get a cheapy job done – we’ve been going to open houses lately and so many of them have had shoddy construction in renovations at some point or another and it’s so obvious when it’s cheap! Just looks awful and doesn’t wear well over time.
Does your architect believe the bids to be too high for the scope of work? Are the drawings and scope complete and detailed? Are the fixtures and finishes specified? If you have received say 3 bids from well qualified contractors and they all came in higher than your budget, then this means your budget will not cover the work as specified. Better to scale back the work and get a quality job from a qualified and reliable contractor than to seek out a low bid from a company who will give you a lousy job or hit you with change orders all the time. You get what you pay for.
