Topic is flies around the stoop…I take it everyone has this problem…just seems like mine is way worse…anyone found a way of controlling the buzzing hoardes?

To head of the smart responses…no there is no trash/dead animals housed in my stoop area…

  1. I have been joking to my friends that my house continues to unleash plague after plague on me: mice, flies, mosquitoes, no-see-ums, ants. I feel like I’m always in combat mode with something! Yes, they are particularly bad in Fort Greene and have kept me from fully enjoying the yard. I have hung those sticky strips in the yard to catch flies and sweep the front area by the stoop a lot. My neighbor also hoses down the sidewalk pretty frequently. I also keep all my windows closed and a can of flying insect Raid handy at all times. If I go on the deck, I immediately light a citronella candle. It don’t know if any of this helps outside, but at least inside is relatively insect free. Until the next plague.

  2. Growing up in the bush in australia we always had plenty of flies (though certainly not as dirty as the ones in the city). If they got into the house we would catch them with a handheld vacuum cleaner… Easiest when they went up to the window.

  3. My arms and legs are covered in mystery welts from getting bitten by something. Everyday there is a new bite or two, and I have no clue when I’m getting bitten.

  4. we have gross black flies too…

but the mosquitoes are the worst. lately we can’t enjoy the backyard, even for 5 minutes. they’re vicious.

  5. I have the same thing in my back patio – hoards of gorss, large black flies the lie and buzz about in the shade. I was thinking there was a fly nest nearby. But I’m not sure fies even have nests… I usually wave them into the air in a comical rage.

  6. Yes I am having the same problem – not so much with house flies but with those little gnat/fruit flies, and the ants. I dont know of any spray that is good to use around pets and children so I have been spraying them with hairspray and it seems to be working.

  7. The flie are insignificant to the plethora of blood sucking mosquitoes.
We try to cut our grass down to a buzz so that they don’t dwell within the moist blades.
My neighbors have tried the peppermint sticks for the ants, but it hasn’t worked

  8. I’m not sure why this happens, and I’m sorry I don’t have an answer for you, but this year it seems like fire, pestilence and death…swarms of ants trying to get into the house via the back door, climbing up the front facade and trying to get into the parlor floor window; mosquitoes attacking while you’re trying to put the key in your front door; earthworms coming out of the soil, yikes! We keep everything scrupulously clean, inside and out. You might not be alone…has anyone else experienced this?
