We just finished renovating our stoop and one or more dogs (or their less than responsible owners) have decided it’s a great place to relieve themselves. Do the dog repellent sprays work or are there any other suggestions for stopping this?

Thanks.

  1. You can also try scrubbing your steps with LySol, Pine Sol or any strong-smelling pine cleaner. The disinfectant properties seem to repel the dogs. Don’t dilute it.

  2. Are you sure it is only dogs? Dog urine may smell a little, but human urine has a much stronger odor. Make sure it is not a midnight pee-er also.

  3. Instead of Clorox (which I haven’t tried but will), I’ve used distilled white vinegar. Apparently, anything containing ammonia won’t work as dogs confuse it with urine. The vinegar works great indoors and out.

  4. i heard vinegar works. i got into a heated discussion with another dog owner on my block who refused to pick after his dog after the dog did his business in front of my building. he threathen to key my car and sure enough, shortly after someone keyed my car. i tried the chlorox and it didn’t work. someone else recommended lime because it’s itchy. i ended up getting major rashes from carrying it. so far, the vinegar thing seems to work. good luck. inconsidered dog owners are the worst.

  5. Try spraying a little amount of clorox, that will kill the odor and suddenly the dogs will stop it.They tend to do it were someone went before. If don’t smell they may pass. But it’s still the animal’s fault, not the dogs’s.

  6. Please note, that I am not denouncing all dog owners — only the ones who are so disrespectful as to engage in such unpleasant conduct. Productive responses and suggestions are much appreciated.

  7. I would be concerned that the errant dog owners would see through the ploy and target my stoop even more. Alternatively, they might think puppies pooping is cute and video-worthy.
