Does anyone know if a DOB permit is required when refacing your brownstone facade?

  1. You would have to file for a permit for the scaffolding, yes, if it covered any part of the public right-of-way (i.e., the sidewalk). In this case it is known as a “sidewalk bridge”.

  2. So, for instance, I want to paint my cornice myself. The building is three stories tall and I dont feel safe on really tall extension ladders. If I rent and install pipe scaffolding to do the job I don’t need a permit to paint but I do need a license and or permit for the scaffolding?

  3. The type of facade work determines whether a permit is required or not (regardless of scafolding requirements) – For example installing a new brick face does require a permit.

  4. I am currently having the facade done. This work DOES NOT require a permit. A permit is required for the scaffolding only. Permits are for work that alters the home, like electric, plumbing, moving walls etc. We don’t live in New Jersey where the inspectors drive around looking for people with hammers and screw guns and hitting them up for a permits.

  5. Homeowner can get permits to do some types of work, like sidewalk replacement, as long as they don’t hire anyone else to help them, Yes? I was told that in order for a NYC contractor to get a permit for home remodeling they have to be licensed and provide evidence of workman’s comp. true or false? So unlicensed contractors cant get permits, unless they are working under someone else’s trade name or as a subcontractor? Not counting specific trades like plumbing, electrical, architectural services that have their own license requirements. As for the question about doing it yourself, my friends painted their house with scaffolding, no permits, without incident.

  6. I never see DOB permits on facade work done by Malek or any of the other top contractors in the area. Just their signs and nothing else. Am I mistaken?

  7. What if we are doing the work ourselves? We are planning to rent a hanging scaffolding and paint the outside with the help of a friend. Do we need a permit then?
    Thanks!
