I think I want to put in some ceiling fans in my brownstone – and am wondering how folks here feel about them? ALso, I’m overwhelmed by the choices – and would like some help in electing a good quality fan, as well as one that looks good in an older house. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  1. the best are by the modern fan company. they are beautiful and don’t have that “cheap” look, well because they aren’t. they work well, are quiet and truly fabulous!

  2. I have a Hunter and a cheap model from the now defunct Service Merchandise. Both have worked well, although the Hunter is more powerful. The Hunter’s motor burned out a few years ago after about 15 years. Since it had a lifetime guarantee I brought it to what was then the closest authorized service place (the name of which I’ve forgotton). After a couple of months with no fan (and no satisfactory response) I called Hunter to complain. They sent me a new fan and cancelled their contract with the repair place(about which they had received many complaints). IMO Hunter is a great company, though I hope they now have a better repair agency in Brooklyn.

  3. I am happy with our Emerson fan which, after much deliberation, we installed in our front parlor (we would rather have a chandelier but it’s simply too hot in the summer to enjoy the room otherwise). Because we wanted it to blend in, we went with a plain white version that has neat “uplighting” illuminating the ceiling medallion (no downlights at all). In this heat, it feels and looks awesome.

  4. I have a Hunter fan in my bedroom, and it’s fabulous. Hunter has a very good variety of styles, so you should be able to find something to complement your decor. My fan has rosewood blades, brushed antique gold finish, and optic glass shades. I’ve had it for about 7 years now, so I don’t remember exactly how much it cost but I do know it was quite reasonable. I bought it at one of those lighting stores on the Bowery. Check out their website; it also has good tips on how to select the right fan for your space.

  5. Ceiling fans have saved my life this summer. I had one installed in my bedroom, and it has made this recent heat bearable.

I found my fan on Ebay, and paid less than $100 for a $200+ fan. I personally hate most of the fans at both HD and Lowe’s. The ones that would be period appropriate always seem to have the worst garish looking light fixtures on them, and when I thought I’d have to settle for them, I would have not used the lights. They were, however, affordable, so if I hadn’t found my fan on Ebay, I would have settled for a plain “wooden” bladed fan.

If you got the bucks, great period fans can be found here:

I really like some of the period looking Minka fans. Also Fanimation has some cool stuff. I’ll have to start saving my pennies.
