What R-value have people found acceptable for the end wall insulation of brownstones? Similarlarly for the attic? Also, can anyone give feedback on cotton batting insulation? Thanks

  1. I used the cotton insulation as well and am really happy I did. So much nicer to work with than fiberglass and you don’t have to worry about breathing in all that crap. As the poster above noted, it is quite dusty and I would still wear a dust mask while installing but I would rather be breathing in cotton fiber than fiberglass! The thermal value of the insulation is on par with the fiberglass but as a sound insulator it is better. We used it in both the walls and ceiling and used the 5 inch batting and the 3 inch batting in different places. I would decide what to use by how much space you have in your wall. In typical 2×4 framing you will only be able to fit the 3 inch batting, but in the ceiling you may be able to fit the 5 inch.

  2. Thanks lovemycarroll – this is the stuff that we have been considering. Could you pls tell me which value did you use, where did you use it (walls, ceilings or both) and have you found it to be effective?

  3. we used that recycled denim insulation and i’ve got to say it was a pleasure to work with….emphasized even more so when we ran out and had to buy a bit of fiberglass… ugh! it’s not itchy , you can pull pieces apart to fit spaces better with your hands (no knives), only things is it’s a bit dusty but if you shake out the sheets first it’s not a problem. we used it in our ceilings…it only comes in 2 values.
