I only have a 70 amp breaker box with a 100 amp service but the lines are aluminium/cloth covered and was told that when changing out breaker boxes the wires might break and I should replace these wires – so I have decided to also upgrade amps while replacing the wires – question is what do most homes have 150 amps or 200 amps? Also do you know any lic electricans who can work and file with con ed to have all work completed – thanks

  1. We upgraded from 35 amp service (!!!) to 200 based on the recos of two licensed electricians. We use Tony Ceriello, who’s been very good. They can handle any Con Ed stuff you need, but any licensed electrician should be able to do the Con Ed stuff for you. Good luck.

  2. I just went through the same issue. In the bids that I went for, I asked for suggestions based on the projected appliances that I was putting in and the increased lines/projected usage. Everyone gave me bids at 200 amps- except the guy I ultimately went with! My uncle the fancy builder told me to put in 200 amps. All of my neighbors have put in 200 amps.
My feeling is that if you can afford it, better to cover your bases than wish you had done more. Our electrician is very old school and has done an excellent job ( when he shows up which is why I am not giving you his name), but he is also not thinking about resale value of my house for the next generation…
