Yeah, it’s that time again. I’ve read all the posts and have a pretty good idea what I’m in for, but I’m thinking about finally pulling the trigger on the ductless A/C this Summer and wondered if anyone had any advice regarding installers and installation technique. Anyone have any specific gripes or regrets or good/bad experiences with any particular brands or installation? We’re in a 12 foot wide by 50 foot deep frame 3 story single family, if that makes any difference to you. Thanks in advance for your advice.
I’ve had a single small Mitsubishi Mr. Slim for about five years now cooling 1700 sq ft of open designed space (see web site) and it is phenominal! It only costs about $20/month to run it! When we do run it… mostly we run it in dehumidification mode.
We just added an additional 900 sq ft to our house and so we moved the Mr. Slim to that new addition and installed a split ductless Fujitsu in the main part of the house. The Fujitsu is rated at 21 SEER which is off the current governmental rating scale and it should be great next cooling season. The Fujitsu is currently head of Mitsubishi in ductless air right now.
I used Fred from Rumba Air. He does great work, period. And his prices are reasonable.
you can see his work at Sip Fine Wine at 67 5th Avenue
his number: 718-348-8328
you can put regular vents in floors, cielings, walls without dropped cielings these days. this mr slim system with it’s protruding units doesn’t look as good to me… I guess you have to have a unit in each room, which doesn’t seem too efficient either. I can have my central a/c on all the time and the electrical bill is only an extra 100-200 a month.
One installation tip: pipes need to be run to collect and drain condensation. Ask your installer what kind of plumbing they’re going to use for this. It doesn’t have to be the same quality you’d use for main water supply or drain lines but you want anything that’s going to be plastered into your walls to be durable, so you don’t want the installer using some random plastic tubing they picked up on the cheap.
We’ve had the Mitsubishi Mr. Slim for about 4 years now and can’t say a bad thing about it. Its so quiet and runs like a top. I also did lots of research before the purchase and from what I was able to gather, Mitsubishi has mastered the ductless a/c over say any other brand trying to play catch-up We definitely upped the curb appeal now with no exposed window a/c’s. I was going to buy the unit online and have someone install it but used Weston Bros. out of Queens who gave a fair price for the unit and install. Nice people, quality work.
For a true central a/c system, you should go with a split system, preferably one zone per floor. You can try Palone Bros if you’re shopping around.
I hope you do receive many responses to this question as I am also ready to commit to this system for the street level floor of my brownstone and I wanted some recommendations for who to call for estimates and installation.
