Do I need licensed/insured for interior paint job?
Just bought a co-op in PS and am looking for someone to paint the place. Should I look for someone that is licensed/insured? What are the benefits/risks involved in using someone who isnt? There won’t be any construction/remodeling, just painting. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Another word about unlicensed contractors. If you don’t pay them they have no legal right to collect as they are operating against the law. Good reason to get your license. Kitchen cabinet installation requires a Home improvement license.
Interior Painters (no alterations to walls ceilings) DO NOT need a license to do work in a private home or condo/co op. NYC consumer affairs does not require any license… They operate under the group of workers as do interior decorators, floor sanding companies, upholsters, and furniture refinishers.
On the other-hand, anyone else doing home remodeling like plumbing electrical building walls, carpentry, installing windows roof work, cement work, iron work is considered a home improvement contractor and all work over $200 must be done by a licensed individual or company. To install interior or exterior scaffolding requires another kind of license but that does not apply in your case.
My recommendation to you is do all moving of valuable breakable items your self. The other thing is to check with your homeowner policy to see that you are covered in case of personal injury. Say the guy drops a compound bucket on his foot and the guy’s wife sues you for “loss of spousal services in the bedroom” I’m not kidding either.
So what are the risks of not having an insured/licensed person paint in my co-op? Does an interior paint job need to be done by a licensed person or not? No construction or scaffolding.
thanks
Any outside parson(s) working in your house must be licensed and insured. Call hasan at Metro, he does lot of work in brownstones. I do not know if he does interior painting. But he in the past provided us with all insurance certificates when worked out side of our building. 718-521-1435
What are the requirements of your co op? Painting is considered interior decoration not construction so they don’t need to have permits or a home improvement contractors license. If they are doing scafolding work i would require insurance. Most big painting companies are insured and have workers comp for their employees.
