More experienced renovators may already know this, but on the chance that some do not (I just discovered it unfortunately), renovations that qualify as capital improvements are not subject to NY state sales tax. A lot of work appears to qualify, and it can obviously save quite a bit over the course of a big, or even a small, project. You need to provide a certificate of capital improvement to your vendor (some may provide them automatically).
