We recently demo’d part of the ceiling of our 4th floor ceiling (with the intent to make it even with the rest of the apartment)and noticed there’s no insulation. Boy, talk about a reason for our enormous heating bills this past winter. Any suggestions for insulation? Is having insulation blown in our only option? Is this something we can do ourselves? We’re relatively handy.
We have a floor thru, and the ceiling in the front room approaches 9.5 feet while the back room seems standard, and perhaps a little sloped. We took down part of the ceiling in the back room ourselves, hoping to correct the slope and perhaps raise the ceiling, and found that there was no insulation.
What is the price to do insulation in a brownstone crawlspace/attic – blown or otherwise? What cost savings can one expect to realize? When I had my Bed-Stuy 2-family inspected, the engineer suggested blown-in insulation for the space just under the roof – but I’m not sure what’s involved…
I am curious, what do you mean by to make it even with the rest of the apt? I have a sloped roof/ceiling, starts at 8′ on one end and goes to 5.5 ft, is this the sort of thing you are dealing with? Who are you using to do the work? THanks
I prefer blown insulation or faom in the attic/crawl space since it gets into all the crevices. typical batt is also an option, but cost wise I find the two options pretty close when your time/effort and taken into account.
