I have a woodframe townhouse in Bedstuy, 16×30 and three floors. I want to get one side of the house soundproofed. I unfortunately share a party wall with some loud morons. Only on one side of the house, the othe neighbors are fine. It seems like the wood frame of the house transmits sound all around the house. Is there any way to soundproof a party wall?
Does anyone have any price estimates/ good contractors they could share for this type of work?
we too had a party wall in our frame in CH. we opened the wall, put metal stud up, filled the studs with heavy sound-proof insulation then sheetrocked with two layers of 5/8 board.
A more through approach would be to build a stud wall with 2X6 plates and 2X4 studs that are staggered, then insulate, then double 5/8 sheetrock. google sound proofing and you will see plenty of examples.
the last remaining link may be common floor joists with the neighbor. we had those, cut them and re-fastened them so now we dont hear anyone walking around next door.
Look under the “Quality of Life” category in this Forum. Scroll down and you will find several posts about noise reduction strategies for party walls. I did some research on this topic last year and found an interesting product called Quietrock. (No, I have not tried it). However, there are several other solutions available that are likely to be less expensive. Again, read the old posts.
