I have what I believe is an original stained glass panel in the dining room wall over wainscotting. It is coated with layers and layers of paint. But, The panel is no longer open to the outside of the house. I’d like to safely strip the paint to see what is exactly under there. Assuming it is stained glass, what is the safest way to remove the paint?

  1. I haven’t stripped stained glass, but I have done lots of marble and I think it would be similar–you don’t want to scratch or crack the surface.

I used methylene chloride stripper, like Rock Miracle. Let it sit for 10 minutes or so in manageable sections and scrape it off with non-metal tools…I used plastic putty knives, chopsticks and those plastic scrubby sponges. When you have most of the paint off, you could use an old toothbrush or very fine steel wool for the last round. Then I would go over the whole thing with mineral spirits. Good luck.
